AB  - Shoulder  dystocia  is  one  of  the  most  dreaded  and  dramatic  complications  encountered  in  obstetrics.  It  is  a  true  emergency  that  can  lead  to  high  rates  of  maternal  morbidity  as  well  as  neonatal  morbidity  and  mortality.  Various  maneuvers  can  free  the  impacted  shoulder  to  obviate  fetal  hypoxia.  The  steps  are  completed  expeditiously,  but  mechanical  force  must  be  tempered  to  avoid  maternal  and  fetal  traumatic  injury.  The  importance  of  this  obstetric  complication  and  its  sequelae  were  emphasized  by  the  appointment  of  a  Task  Force  by  American  College  of  Obstetricians  and  Gynecologists  president  Dr.  James  T.  Breeden.  This  working  group  published  its  monograph  Neonatal  Brachial  Plexus  Palsy  in  2014.
